Life in the village: New Year’s eve 年三十晚

February 11, 2021

On the eve of the Lunar New Year the indigenous inhabitants of Tsing Yi island gather at their ancestral halls to receive the new year with their ancestors.

Before midnight, offerings are made in the form of joss sticks. At midnight firecrackers are lit to welcome the new year.

I spoke to one of the village chiefs and he told me of his concerns over the lack of youth representation during the new year eve reception. Personally, I worry about it too.
